Everyone knows diet is important for physical health but not many consider diet as important for mental health. It’s important to remember that what we feed our body we feed our brain as well. There are many foods that can hinder brain activity but there are also foods that will help with memory, productivity, brain capacity and focus.
We’ve heard about the studies done recently in schools where reducing the junk food in children’s diets has shown that test scores go up, children and sit still for longer periods and pay attention more. These facts are not only true for children but are true for adult brains as well. Junk food contains a lot of sugar or high fructose corn syrup which should be avoided. Over processed foods or those that contain trans fatty acids are not only terrible for the body but for the brain as well.
hese bad foods slow many mental processes and reduce our energy and concentration levels. Unhealthy diets are linked to a higher risk of dementia and depression in adults.
Now that we know what’s not good for the brain, let’s focus on what we should be feeding the brain. Stick with fresh, whole foods that contain low levels of natural sugars like fruit, vegetables and whole grains. These foods will keep your brain functioning efficiently on all levels. To improve brain power and learning eat food high in anti-oxidants like fresh berries, garlic, raw spinach, cooked kale and raisins. Antioxidants help clear the brain and will improve your focus and concentration. Omega-3 fatty acids are another important brain food. These fatty acids enhance brain performance and nourish the brain cell membrane which builds communication pathways in the brain. Fish and fish oil are the most common foods to eat for omega-3 but it can also be found in walnuts and flax seed.
Focus and communication in the brain are important but there are other brain functions that we can feed with our diet that are just as important. Cocoa found in dark chocolate is loaded with cognitive development and mood enhancing properties. Herbs such as rosemary and sage will increase memory and passion flower is capable of reducing anxiety and soothing moods.
To keep your brain functioning at its best, balance meals with essential fats, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Be smart about what you feed your body and your brain.
